The Four Suits — Egyptian Gods

Four Suits. Four Seasons. One Unified System.

The four suits are not decorative categories. They are the four quarters of the solar year encoded into the deck. This is not interpretation — it is the structural logic the Egyptian priests built into the system from the beginning.

Richmond quotes the Egyptian astronomer Ammon directly: “These cards were constructed with perfect mathematical and symbolical reference to time, planetary motion, and the occult calculations and mysteries of the Magi.”

Each suit governs one quarter of the year, one season, one domain of life, and two planetary rulers. All four together cover the full cycle of existence.

Hearts — The First Quarter — Spring

Hearts govern the first quarter of the year. Their season is spring. Their domain is love, friendship, and the emotional life.

Richmond’s source: “Hearts in the first quarter symbolize spring, also love and friendship.”

Two planets rule the suit of Hearts, and each gives it a different quality:

  • Venus rules Hearts from the standpoint of friendship and love — warmth, beauty, affection, devotion
  • Mercury rules Hearts from the standpoint of passion — desire, longing, emotional urgency, the heart’s heat

Hearts are the emotional intelligence of the deck. They govern how we feel, who we love, how we attach, and how we heal. Heart-suit people experience life through feeling first. Their primary work involves the inner world — relationships, family, the subconscious, the bonds that define a life.

The lessons of Hearts involve learning to feel without being consumed, to love without losing oneself, and to understand that emotional sensitivity is a form of intelligence, not a weakness.

Clubs — The Second Quarter — Summer

Clubs govern the second quarter of the year. Their season is summer. Their domain is knowledge, learning, and mental life.

Richmond’s source: “Clubs in the second quarter, summer; also knowledge, learning, religion, heat, temper, quarrels, law suits.”

Two planets rule the suit of Clubs:

  • Mars rules Clubs from the standpoint of lawsuits, quarrels, and heat — argument, competition, combativeness, legal conflict
  • Earth (Terra) rules Clubs from the standpoint of knowledge — learning, teaching, study, intellectual mastery

Clubs are the mental intelligence of the deck. They govern how we think, what we know, how we communicate, and how we argue. Club-suit people process the world through information. Their primary work involves the mind — research, writing, teaching, and building systems of understanding.

Summer is the season of maximum light and heat. Clubs carry that heat — in the intensity of debate, the fire of a new idea, and the friction that comes from minds in contact. The Club’s challenge is channeling that heat into clarity rather than conflict.

Diamonds — The Third Quarter — Fall

Diamonds govern the third quarter of the year. Their season is autumn. Their domain is money, resources, and material reality.

Richmond’s source: “Diamonds in the third quarter symbolize fall, when the crops are gathered and sold, and therefore represent wealth, power, and trade.”

Two planets rule the suit of Diamonds:

  • Jupiter rules Diamonds for wealth — abundance, expansion, good fortune, accumulation
  • Neptune rules Diamonds for commerce — transactions, exchange, what flows between people, value in motion

Diamonds are the material intelligence of the deck. They govern what we build, what we own, what we earn, and how we measure worth. Diamond-suit people engage the world through productivity and value creation. Their primary work involves the material plane — business, finance, and creating things that last.

Autumn is the harvest season. The crops gathered and sold. Diamonds carry that energy — things becoming tangible, labor converting to wealth, potential becoming real. The Diamond’s lesson is learning that self-worth and net worth are not the same thing.

Spades — The Fourth Quarter — Winter

Spades govern the fourth quarter of the year. Their season is winter. Their domain is work, health, wisdom, and transformation.

Spades are the most powerful suit in the deck. They govern the deepest trials and the highest wisdom.

Two planets rule the suit of Spades:

  • Saturn rules Spades from the standpoint of death — endings, limitation, karma, the hardest lessons
  • Uranus rules Spades from the standpoint of labor — disciplined work, endurance, the effort that produces mastery

Spades are the transformational intelligence of the deck. They govern what we endure, what we shed, how we work, and what we become through difficulty. Spade-suit people are built for depth. Their primary work involves transformation — through discipline, through loss, through the long patient effort of becoming.

Winter is the season of stripping bare. What does not survive the cold does not deserve the spring. Spades carry that relentless quality. Their highest expression is not survival — it is wisdom earned through surviving.

The Structure Beneath the Structure

The four suits encode one more layer that connects them directly to astrology. The three court cards in each suit — Jack, Queen, King — represent the three astrological houses of that suit’s zodiac quarter. Four suits times three court cards equals twelve. Twelve houses of the zodiac, encoded in the court cards of the deck.

The system is not a collection of symbols. It is a unified mathematical architecture where every element reinforces every other. Suits are seasons are planetary domains are zodiac quarters. The deck is one integrated system, and the suits are its four cardinal pillars.
